Nurse\u00a0practitioners and physician assistants\u00a0for the federal government have just resolved claims<\/a> of unpaid wages\u00a0for\u00a0a staggering\u00a0$160 million. These care\u00a0providers\u00a0whoworked for\u00a0the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs\u00a0alleged they went unpaid when working\u00a0overtime\u00a0hours.Approximately 3,200\u00a0current and former nurse practitioners and physician assistants\u00a0who worked for this federal agency\u00a0stand to benefit\u00a0from this payout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nurses claimed they were forced to complete significant hours of overtime in order to update patients\u2019 electronic health records. Monitoring and responding to patient-related notifications in the Computerized Patient Record System known as \u201cView Alerts\u201d were often completed after their normal scheduled hours. These \u201cView Alerts\u201d were time sensitive requests for information related to patient care that if they didn\u2019t complete prior to leaving their shift they\u2019d be subject to disciplinary action. Even though the agency expected these tasks to be completed they did not pay their nurse practitioners or physician assistants for their overtime hours above 40 hours per work week when updating the \u201cView Alerts\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
